BASIS Shavano Middle School HOSA Takes on New Challenges

One week you learn to apply a tourniquet and the next; the next you complete against other students in the region. Since starting at BASIS Shavano last year, the Middle School HOSA chapter has introduced students to “upper school” activities by mixing hands-on health-related activities with the thrill of competition.
This year, many students are participating in a variety of competitions including Health Career Display, Medical Terminology, and the opportunity to earn the Barbara James Service Award or compete in the HOSA Marketing Challenge.
Monday afternoons are always fueled with excitement in the middle school club as advisor Mrs. Hunnicutt guides the growing group of students. This year, the stakes are increased as middle schoolers will jump to the highest level and compete at the State Leadership Conference. Eighth grader Reyna finds the new jump intimidating. “It’s a big jump that can stress participants, so being prepared and practicing is important.”
The after school club is a gateway for middle schoolers to try their skills in health-related fields, and under the guidance of Mrs. Hunnicutt, this year’s participants are prepared to compete without going through the qualifier rounds at the Area level.
