Kanikaa Karthik
Kanikaa Karthik (‘27) is the Co-Founder of the Journalism Club at BASIS Shavano and Editor-in-Chief of The Dragon. Driven by a commitment to student advocacy and creative writing, she also leads the school’s Writing Club and serves as a Student Council Representative. Outside of her academic pursuits, if she isn’t playing the keyboard, Kanikaa can be found with a good book.
Erika Engh
Erika Engh (’27) is the Co-Founder of the Journalism Club at BASIS Shavano and Editor-in-Chief of The Dragon. She has a passion for journalistic writing and education, and specifically enjoys topics on politics and global news. Outside of Journalism, she leads the school’s Environmental club and varsity volleyball team. Other than academic activities, she can be found engaging in volunteer activities, music, and athletics.

Olivia Covey
Olivia Covey (’30) is in her first year of journalism and joined to write about things she is interested in, hoping to share those interests with others. Outside of journalism, Olivia enjoys reading and playing instruments. She hopes that journalism will help her strengthen her writing and storytelling skills.

McKenna Florez
McKenna Florez (28’) is a recent addition to the world of journalism and strives to write exciting reports on a variety of fascinating topics. Ranging from small school entertainment to thrilling academic achievements, McKenna always writes with her all. Apart from journalism, she leads the research and writing department for Spanish Honors Society, plays varsity volleyball, coaches the middle school and varsity golf teams, and is an active volunteer who loves helping out her community.
Sophia Lopez
Sophia Lopez (‘28) has found a new interest in journalism, and is excited to begin her first year in the program. She enjoys reporting on athletic events, and hopes to gain experience in sports journalism. Outside of her commitments to writing, she plays basketball, volleyball, and soccer at the varsity level and volunteers to teach children at her local church.
