On March 24th, 2006, Hannah Montana premiered on Disney Channel, starting a fandom that would last decades. Hannah Montana, played by Miley Cyrus, follows a teenage girl who juggles her life as a standard teen and covert pop star. Throughout the show, Hannah highlights the importance of expressing oneself and overcoming social pressures and insecurities.
The show had noticeable impacts on music, fashion, and teen TV shows. Hannah Montana influenced many Generation Z girls by popularizing a blending of pop and rock genres, creating a “best of both worlds” outcome. Furthermore, the characters promoted a bold, maximalist style based on early 2000s clothing styles.
Now, 20 years later, Disney has revived the nostalgic story with the Hannah Montana 20th Anniversary Special.
The Hannah Montana special premiered March 24th, 2026. Afterwards, it was also released on Disney+ and Hulu for streaming. According to Variety Magazine, the special had garnered 6.3 million views within three days of being on-air. Although the show’s finale was 15 years ago, its popularity is still prevalent and recognizable. In fact, the show surpassed viewership for other content within a similar timeframe, such as Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour (Taylor’s Vision).
The special included a rebuilt set, an interview with Alex Cooper, and many performances of the original soundtrack, followed by a brand new song: “Younger You.” Cooper interviewed actress Miley Cyrus about her overall experiences, memories, and friendships made throughout the filming of the show. The special included appearances from Selena Gomez, who played Hannah’s “nemesis,” Dolly Parton, as Hannah’s godmother, Aunt Dolly, and Chappell Roan, who made a brief cameo. Miley Cyrus’ parents Tish Cyrus-Purcell and Billy Ray Cyrus, representing Hannah Montana’s parents, contributed as well.
The cast, reminded of their involvement in the episodes recorded from the original series, recalled many memories as they walked through the old set. They guided viewers through significant places of the set, such as the pop-star’s closet, kitchen, and living room, while pointing out decor items specific to the show.
The Hannah Montana 20th Anniversary Special connected millions of viewers to their childhood show through the music, cast, interviews, and much more. Fans are looking forward to being able to reconnect with the songs and characters as they live through their childhood show again.
